Luka joined the lab in 2023 after earning his PhD in chemical oceanography from the MIT/WHOI Joint Program. His doctoral studies focused on examining interactions between rivers and coastal margins in the Alaskan Arctic. As an interdisciplinary scientist, Luka’s thesis employed aspects of physical oceanography, chemical oceanography, and remote sensing to address complex and ephemeral processes within these important coastal biogeochemical systems. He now brings his expertise in remote sensing to this group to help improve our understanding of carbon dynamics in ecologically and socio-economically vital estuaries, bays, and lagoons. Before turning to oceanography, Luka received dual bachelor’s degrees in chemical engineering and applied mathematics with a minor in chemistry from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst.
